'GVA' seventh in Unbound Gravel
In the strongest ever field of Unbound Gravel, BMC ambassador Greg van Avermaet (GVA) finished seventh. Multiple flat tires did not prevent him from finishing within the top 10.
With gravel world champion Matej Mohoric, among others, at the start line in Kansas, Unbound Gravel 2024 was destined to be a massive battle. On behalf of BMC, not only was GVA aiming for a good finish, but also Jelle van Damme, a former professional football player, aimed to play a role in the gravel race.
Unfortunately for GVA, he suffered multiple flat tires and had to chase solo for over 60 kilometers. Despite excellent and fast pit stops at the BMC Aid Stations along the course, the main chasing group did not work together well enough to catch the leaders.
A seventh place was the best possible result for the Olympic Champion. It was also BMC’s best result ever in the men’s category at Unbound Gravel.
Van Avermaet said after the finish: "I felt good at the start, but two flats early on set me back. I managed to catch up to the leading group, but it took a lot of energy. I hung in there and finished with a solid 7th place! After a good night's sleep, I can say it was a great experience."
Van Damme commented: "This race was pure madness. I forgot just how much a person can endure with the right mindset. I never stopped, never gave up. I faced two flat tires, a small crash, and got dropped once on a steep hill. I managed to fight back to the leading group three times. In the end, I found a solid group of four riders and crossed the finish line at p93/133."
